How Sociogene reads your shape.
Sociogene turns twenty short questions into a portrait of how your organization operates. Here is exactly how, and what it can and cannot tell you.
The idea behind it.
Decades of organizational research point to a useful truth: you can describe an organization not by what it does, but by where it sits on a few core tensions. Sociogene stands on that lineage, including the dimension-based culture mapping behind frameworks like the Competing Values Framework, and adapts it for associations specifically.
The four dimensions.
Your shape comes from where you fall on four spectrums. How power works, from a strong center to shared consensus. How you meet change, from preserving what works to building what is next. Who you serve, from your members inward to your mission outward. And what powers the work, from volunteer passion to professional operations. Each one names a real tension every association lives with.
The questions.
Twenty short questions, five for each dimension. Every question is a choice on a spectrum between two ways an organization can lean. We use several questions per dimension so no single answer decides your shape, and we frame them as concrete situations rather than abstract traits, because people answer honestly about situations they recognize.
From answers to a shape.
Your answers place you along all four dimensions, which gives you a position in a four-dimensional space. We compare that position to nine archetypes, each defined by a characteristic blend of the four, and your nearest match becomes your lead shape. Because almost no organization sits exactly on an archetype, we also show how you blend, the shapes you lean toward next.
Your signature.
Your signature is generated directly from your four scores, so it is unique to your exact position. Two organizations that share an archetype but differ in their blend get different signatures. It is a portrait of your numbers, not decoration.
The field, and how distinctive you are.
We place you among other associations and show how distinctive your shape is compared to the field. Early on, that comparison rests on a founding baseline, drawn from our own informed assessments of associations and from organizational research, and it is steadily replaced by real, verified responses as they come in. The data behind the field is always de-identified.
Patterns, not scores.
There is no good or bad shape, and no ranking. Every dimension and every archetype carries its own strengths and blind spots. Sociogene describes identity, not performance, so nothing here is a grade.
What it can and cannot tell you.
Sociogene is a mirror for reflection, not a clinical or validated diagnostic. Your result reflects how the person answering sees the organization, so different people may read the same association a little differently, and that is useful rather than a flaw. Treat it as a starting point for a conversation, and revisit it over time to see how your shape moves.
